Parlour, speaking ahead of United’s crunch Premier League clash at home to Swansea City, has compared the Magpies to another crisis club, Aston Villa.

He said: “Newcastle United could be joining Villa in the Championship next season.

“Swansea were in that relegation battle. 40 points now so they are safe and it has been a very good season for Swansea.

“Newcastle, poor performance against Southampton. A similar situation to Aston Villa, are the players fit to wear that shirt?

“They have fantastic support and they follow them all over the country.

Rafa Benitez has tried to make them more solid and organised and again this is a must win for Newcastle.

“I think that Swansea will go there and make themselves hard to beat. I am going with a point apiece, no good for Newcastle but Swansea will be happy with the point.”
