Members of Drawn Together, which meets every Thursday at The Customs House in South Shields, are taking part in the Creative Age Challenge.

It is part of a national scheme run by Equal Arts’ Creative Age project and Drawn Together was invited to take part as a pilot group.

Lesley Guy, Gallery Learning Officer at The Customs House, said: “Equal Arts improve older people’s lives through creativity and the Creative Age Challenge is about getting groups of older people to take part in dementia-friendly activities in particular.

“Drawn Together doesn’t define itself as an older people’s group, it is a diverse group of adults ranging from people in their 30s up to their 70s, but we were invited to take part because we are inclusive and the work we do is very ‘in the moment’.

“Members of the group take part in a wide range of mindful drawing activities that are dementia-friendly, so they were really happy to take part.”

The artists set themselves the challenge of filling a wall at The Customs House with postcard-sized drawings, with 320 needed in total.

Members have been gathering sponsorship for the challenge and will also be selling their artwork to raise funds for the group, which is hoping to have some calendars printed featuring some of the artwork.

The postcards will be exhibited at The Customs House from Saturday, November 18.
