ATC squadron celebrates special anniversary

Thirty three cadets from 324 South Shields ATC squadron gathered at St Peter’s church at Harton Village to celebrate the event.

The cadets formed a guard of honour along the path leading up to the church before joining the congregation for a special service where some of the cadets gave readings and read prayers.

Cadets around the country took part in similar parades and church services.

The Air Training Corps was formed on February 5, 1941, by Air Commodore John Chamier to promote and encourage a healthy interest in aviation.

There are now around 42,700 cadets across the country from about 1,009 squadrons. There are also around 9,900 adult volunteers.

It is a big year for the Air Cadets, with various celebrations taking place, including an exhibition in the RAF museum in London and a torch relay happening later in the year.

The Air Cadets take part in various activities from flying and gliding, shooting and sports to the Duke of Edinbrough award scheme.

Air Cadets is strong on discipline, doing drill each parade night which encourages team building and self discipline.

324 South Shields squadron meet on Monday and Friday evenings between 7pm and 9.30pm, at the TA Centre in Highfield Road.

Anyone aged 12 and in year 8 can join, up to the age of 17.
