Ayoze Perez reveals his 'pride' at Newcastle achievement

Ayoze Perez wants to pick up where he left off in the Premier League '“ and fire Newcastle United even higher up the table.

The forward hit form late last season and ended the campaign as the club’s top scorer with eight goals.

Perez netted twice against Chelsea on the final day of the season as Rafa Benitez’s side secured a 10th-placed finish.

“It was a very good season for me, and even better for the team,” said the 24-year-old.

“We got 10th position, and we deserved to get it, and it was an honour to be the top scorer of Newcastle. It made me feel proud of myself.”

The challenge for Perez and his team-mates is improve on last season.

“As a team we’ve got to keep that momentum and confidence from last season,” said Perez.

“Every season is different and tougher. It’s going to be difficult, but it can be another great season.

“Individually, obviously, I want to score goals. It’s my job as a striker, but if I can be more regular in terms of performance, it could be even better.

“I’m very happy with what we did last season, and we try to improve it.”

Newcastle open their pre-season campaign with a friendly against Dublin side St Patrick’s Athletic tonight.

“It’s been a great week (in Ireland), a lot of hard work, but it’s been good,” said Perez. “There a togetherness, and we’re making sure we’re getting fitter.”
