Bradley Lowery's school pays tribute to young boy who touched the hearts of the world

Blackhall Primary School remembers Bradley Lowery.

The former school of cancer battler Bradley Lowery has come together to remember the youngster a year on since his tragic death.

The six-year-old from Blackhall lost his fight to neuroblastoma a year ago on July 7 and to honour his legacy Blackhall Primary have held a poignant celebration of his life.

Staff, pupils and members of the community turned out to the school on Middle Street on Friday, July 6, to hold a summer fair event which paid tribute to the former pupil by honouring his campaign Cancer Has No Colours.

Those in attendance wore various football strips in recognition of the way the brave youngster brought the football community together through the story of his fight to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

Headteacher Joanna Clark and Bradley Lowery Foundation co-founder Lynn Murphy also used the anniversary event to announce their collaboration on a play area project in Bradley's name in a bid to keep his legacy alive.

Called The Bradley Lowery Legacy Project, the school is looking to build a play area featuring a pirate ship called HMS Bradley on the school grounds which can be accessed by pupils of all ages at the school, as well as the wider community.

The project which is expected to cost Â£600,000, looks to be completed by summer 2019, and will also feature an AstroTurf pitch and a full-scale football pitch, which will also be available to the community.

Headteacher Mrs Clark said: "It is a year almost to the day since Bradley's passing.

"When we had our summer fair last year on July 7, we found out that afternoon that Bradley had passed away.

"It was poignant that all the school were together when we heard the news.

"We are aware that the children are very young and are dealing with grief, so we wanted to remember him in a positive way."

The summer fair was held on the school field and saw staff, youngsters and parents, take part in a dance and sing along to the Three Lions song ahead of England's World Cup match in Saturday - honouring the youngster's love of the sport.

Children also held a minute's applause in celebration of his life and shouted his name in unison before they were told about the plans for the play area.

The youngsters and their parents were also shown artists impressions of what it would look like.

Stalls selling Bradley Lowery Foundation merchandise were also at the event to raise further funds for the project.

Pupils were also asked to make a Â£1 donation towards the foundation.

Lynn Murphy said: "We are here to support the school and the children.

"They are going to be a big part in raising the funds for this project which is for the children and for the community to come together.

"It is nice to know that the school has still got Bradley in their thoughts and it is nice that everyone is still getting involved."

Mrs Clark added on the project: "We wanted to do something in Bradley's name .

"We are really pleased that this project will mean that Bradley will be remembered for generations - not just in the school but in the whole of Blackhall as well."
