Carers sought to help house vulnerable adults

The Shared Lives Scheme run by the council is on the lookout for more people to come on board the innovative project.

The scheme aims to provide long term placements, short breaks and emergency support to vulnerable adults.

Carers receive a weekly fee as well as full training and support from professionals.

Those wanting to find out more can attend a special event on February 22 at The Dunes on Sea Road, South Shields between 10am and 3pm.

The information session will enable residents interested in opening up their homes the chance to meet some of those looking for a new family.

Mother and daughter Kim and Jordan Binns, who live in Jarrow, are two people who work as carers for the Shared Lives scheme.

Jordan, 22, is the youngest carer in the South Tyneside scheme, providing respite, emergency and long-term care for vulnerable adults.

Kim, a former care worker, describes her move into becoming a full-time carer as a “natural progression.”

She said: “The girls we care for have become part of our family and, just like raising your own family, we’ve had our ups and downs, but the advantages far outweigh any negatives. I don’t view this as a job, it’s more a way of life.

“It’s been wonderful to see them grow in confidence and become settled and happy. Having them come to trust you and share details of their day is a terrific boost.”
