Charitable youngsters take on spellathon for Children in Need

Simonside Primary School pupils took part in a sponsored spelling challenge throughout the week for the charity which helps disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

The whole-school effort saw 250 pupils attempt to spell 20 words correctly in class before the two best spellers from the challenge went head-to-head to spell the most words correctly.

Deputy head teacher Lisa Pegman was thrilled with the success of the day and said the total raised is yet to be confirmed, as funds continue to pour in. 
She said: “It was fabulous and the children absolutely loved it.

“We just wanted to do something that would both raise funds and support learning, so we decided to do a spellathon.

“Four weeks ago staff gave the children a list of words to learn and then the children then took part in the spellathon in class.
“The two winners then took part in the challenge in front of the whole school to win Pudsey ears and wristbands.

“The teachers also teamed up and took part in a spelling challenge to unscramble the words, which the children were really excited about.”
