Long-serving Tiote, 29 is due to undergo a medical later this week, and the deal could be completed at the weekend.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have been involved in discussions with Tottenham over a move for Townsend, who will be allowed to leave White Hart Lane this month if a club meets chairman Daniel Levy’s asking price.

The two clubs are still some way apart in their respective valuations of the 24-year-old and talks are ongoing.

Tottenham, reluctant to loan Townsend, are looking for around £14million for the England international.

Mauricio Pochettino, the club’s manager, has spoken about Townsend’s situation.

“I’m not involved in the negotiations – I’m the head coach,” said Pochettino. “It’s true that Andros is in a position where he doesn’t play too much for us, but all players are involved in our squad. They only need to wait.

“Andros has not played in the last few months and he wants to play.

“If some facility arrives (to leave), the decision is always from the club. Today, it’s all about rumours. There’s nothing clear.”

Relegation-threatened United are also keen on West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, who could cost more than £20million.
