Civic reception for South Tyneside gold medalists

Gymnastics who brought home the gold from an international contest were invited to a civic reception to celebrate their win.

Kristie Harrington, 18, Sofie Lincoln, 14, and Gabriel Evans, 13, made it to the top of podium in the Women’s Trio (13-19 age group) World Championships in China.

The trio, all members of South Tyneside Gymnastics Club, were invited to Jarrow Town Hall by the Mayor and Mayoress Coun Richard Porthouse and his wife Patricia.

The girls were joined by fellow club gymnastics who also took part in the contest; Lauren Said, 14, and Viena Ramsay, 12, who earned fifth place in the Women’s Pair (12-18 age group).

Erin Mattinson, Lauren Emmerson and Lucy Atkinson were also placed sixth place at the Senior World Championships.

Coun Porthouse said: “It was a privilege to welcome these amazing young people in to Jarrow Town Hall.

“These incredibly talented and committed young people have really helped to put South Tyneside on the map thanks to their recent wins at international competitions.

“They are outstanding ambassadors for the Borough and it was an absolute pleasure to pass on our thanks on behalf of the people of South Tyneside.”

The gymnastics centre is run by Ian and Debbie Said.

It has about 500 users from the age of five months upwards.

The gymnasts at the centre train for up to 23 hours a week.

The club offers training in gymnastics, trampolining, Free G, as well as hosting parent and toddler groups,pilates, yoga and boot camp fitness.
