Clublife in South Tyneside in the spotlight

Gary wrote: “After my last request on your page for information and photographs for the documentary I am making, entitled Home from Home, about workingmen’s clubs, I got a good response, and I would like to share with your readers, these excellent photographs from two clubs.

“The first two pictures are from Sharon Sprouting, in Hebburn.

“They are of her family, who were on the committee of the Hebburn Labour Club, along with barmaids at the club.

“The other pictures were sent by Will Binks and show his family inside the Cleadon Club.

“There is also a copy of his father’s CIU membership card (which I’ll use in tomorrow’s page).

“I have also included a black and white advert taken from the Shields Gazette in 1974 (which again I will include in tomorrow’s page).

“Making the documentary has gone really well. It features interviews and footage from the entertainer Alan Knights, along with customers playing bingo inside the Royal British Legion Club, in Queen Street, South Shields.

“It is now in the final stages of editing, with a running time of 28 minutes.

“Narration is supplied by North East playwright and poet Tom Kelly, while the music comes from local musician Derek Cajaio.

“I will be looking to get it screened locally after the Easter time, this year.”
