College open day will engineer new career opportunities

Engineers are getting the chance to turn their hand to teaching and play their part in reducing a sector skills gap through advice from South Tyneside College.

An open day will show engineering professionals how they can become teachers in the subject.

An engineering open day will allow those with industry skills but lacking a teaching qualification to discover how they can lecture and pass on their know-how.

The event also aims to give prospective engineering students advice on which courses are available to pursue their ambitions.

The advice day is on from 10am to 1pm on Saturday at the college’s Westoe campus in St Georges Avenue, South Shields.

College chief executive Dr Lindsey Whiterod said: “This is a great opportunity for those with engineering experience to find out how they can use their skills to help a new generation of would-be engineers.

“The engineering sector in the North East is suffering a skills shortage and South Tyneside College is playing a leading role in rectifying that through investment in training facilities and excellent course provision.

“We have a tremendously skilled teaching team in place but we are always looking to recruit people from industry with experience and skills that can benefit our students.”

The college has invested about £21million in new facilities since 2010 to help remedy local skills gaps in sectors such as engineering and technology.
