Only a limited number of tickets are left for the Laffalang taking place on Friday and Saturday night at the Westovian’s Theatre in South Shields.

Proceeds from both shows will be donated to the campaign which was kickstarted following the Path to Excellence programme launched by South Tyneside and Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Protestors are fighting against changes which they fear will see the downgrading of the hospital in Harton Lane, with a number of key services moved to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The group has already enlisted the help of a solicitor and has launched a fundraising campaign in order to cover the fees.

It is hoped the comedy night, starring television star Stephen Tompkinson, will help boost the funds further.

Writer Ed Waugh said: “The response has been brilliant. All the profits from the nights will be going to the Save the Hospital campaign.

“We are aiming to raise £4,000 - that’s the target we have set ourselves, and hopefully we will reach it.

“We have about 30 tickets left for the show. We would love to see those sold so we can have a full house.”

Both events will feature comedy sketches involving the Laffalang Gang featuring comedians Bob Stott, Maxie Peters and Micky Cochrane and compered by Steffen Peddie.

Laffalang director Gareth Hunter said: “These brilliant entertainers are well in demand and have given up gigs to perform for us. They are giving their time and effort to the show for expenses only. Saving South Tyneside Hospital is a cause everyone involved with the Laffalang fully supports.

“The response has been incredible. We asked the people of South Tyneside to stand up and be counted with their support and they have responded magnificently.”

The Laffalang starts at 7.30pm on both nights, at Westovian Theatre (Ocean Road, opposite Haven Point), South Shields.

Tickets are priced £13 from The Word, Market Place. Call the box office on 4247788 or book online via www.ticketsource.co.uk/westovians
