Council leader promises fire-hit bins will be replaced 'imminently'

Bins which have been impacted by fires across a South Tyneside park are expected to be replaced quickly.

The leader of South Tyneside Council has said bins across Hebburn which have recently caught fire will be replaced imminently.

Late May saw the latest bin fire in a series of incidents at Carr Ellison Park in the centre of the town.

This followed fires in three bins across the same park in March 2026. Following these incidents earlier in the year South Tyneside Council confirmed a clean-up operation started the following day with replacement bins installed “as soon as possible.”

Following a visit to the town, new South Tyneside Council leader Paul Mackings said the bins will be replaced very soon as part of a crackdown on anti social behaviour.

Taking to social media, he said it was: “Great to walk around Hebburn town centre today ‘(Friday, May 29) with Deputy Leader and Hebburn North Councillor Susan Sybenga.”

He added: “We are also pleased to report that the bins in Carr-Ellison Park which were recently burnt out will be replaced imminently.

“Anti social behaviour is a scourge across our whole Borough, and we are committed as an administration to crack down on ASB - we will be particularly raising the issue of e-bikes at our next meeting with Northumbria Police.”

Councillor Mackings was named as the leader of South Tyneside Council on Tuesday, May 19 after the local elections which saw the Reform Party take control of the council.

Following the latest fire, which took place near the tennis courts to the west of the park, Cllr Karen Pittuck, Lead Member for Highways, Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: “This kind of vandalism is antisocial behaviour and affects everyone who uses and enjoys the park.

“If you know anything about this incident or if you witness anti-social behaviour, please report it so we can respond quickly and help keep our parks safe for all.

“Repairing damage from vandalism costs taxpayers money that could be invested elsewhere in our communities.

“Anti-social behaviour is something residents have raised time and time again. That is why tackling ASB in our town centres and in our communities is a key priority for this Council.”
