Attempted murder charge after man stabbed in early-morning attack in South Shields

A man has been accused of attempted murder following a stabbing at in South Shields.

Michael Lawrence Wilson, 29, appeared at Newcastle Combined Courts on Thursday where he was charged with attempted murder and robbery following an incident in Whiteleas Way, South Shields.

Wilson, of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody and the case was sent for trial, Northumbria Police say. Shortly after 3am on Monday, December 23, officers received reports that a 24-year-old man had been assaulted at an address on Whiteleas Way.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was in a critical but stable condition as of Christmas Eve.

A 28-year-old woman, also arrested as part of the investigation, received no further action.

The force's inquiries remain ongoing and Detective Inspector Sean McGuigan of Northumbria Police has thanked the community for their cooperation.

He said: “An incident like this is likely to shock the local community, but I would like to thank residents for the support they have given our officers during this investigation.

“I would like to reiterate this was an isolated incident with all parties involved thought to be known to each other. A man has now been charged with attempted murder and robbery but our investigation is very much ongoing.

“We are still keen on hearing from anyone with information about this incident.”
