Mark Smith, 45, is wanted by officers in connection with a burglary in the town on November 25.

Police have searched a number of addresses across South Tyneside in a bid to locate Smith, who they say is avoiding officers despite knowing that he is wanted.

Issuing the appeal on Boxing Day, a spokesman for the force said: “We would like to reiterate that it is a criminal offence to harbour someone who is evading arrest and do not want anybody to get into trouble on his account.

“The best outcome for everyone would be for Smith to hand himself into a police station so we can speak to him in connection with the reported break-in.”

Anyone with information about Smith’s whereabouts is asked to call 101 quoting reference 0113885.
