Doorstep scam warning following £5,000 Government grant announcement

Homeowners are being warned to be wary of cold-callers and doorstep fraudsters trying to take advantage of the Government’s new green energy grant scheme.

Under the plans, homeowners will be able to access £5,000 for insulation and energy-saving improvements as part of a £2bn grant scheme focused on cutting emissions, creating jobs and improving the environment due to start this September.

Northumbria Police’s complex fraud unit is urging residents to be vigilant of anyone who cold-calls, citing the grant scheme.

Detective Sergeant Phil Thoburn has advised members of the public to make sure they check ID badges, company names and then double check.

He said: “Do not be rushed into making a decision, insist on time to consider your options and speak to trusted friends and family - a reputable firm would not try and rush you into making a decision.

“Fraudsters are quick to take advantage and manipulate current events into a profitable scheme. They will jump on any bandwagon to make money and we want to make sure residents feel empowered to challenge anyone they think might be trying to take advantage of them. If something seems too good to be true it probably is.

“Remember, if you are cold-called or door knocked – take your time and do not be pressured into handing over any money or bank details. You are entitled to ask for contact details and to check names and identification.”
