The courts have been busy in recent months.
Here are 11 people jailed or given suspended sentences for offences in and around South Tyneside during July and August.
They all appeared at Newcastle Crown Court unless otherwise stated.
9. John James
James, 40, of Imeary Street, South Shields, pleaded guilty to sexual assault; assault by beating; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; two charges of making a threat to kill and one of damaging property. He was sentenced to five years behind bars
10. Samantha Daley
Daley, 29,of Ulverston Gardens, Gateshead, denied unlawful wounding but was convicted after a trial at Durham Crown Court. She was handed a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and must complete a 40-day rehabilitation programme and 180 hours of unpaid work
11. Stephen Bloomfield
Bloomfield, 35, of Ulverston Gardens, Gateshead, denied wounding with intent but was convicted after a trial at Durham Crown Court. He was jailed for 13 years for the offence, as well as the assault of an emergency worker and theft of a mobile phone from separate cases.
