The car was brought to a stop near Testos Roundabout.

Police spotted the blue Jaguar on the A1 near the Angel of the North on Sunday travelling at 101mph before the vehicle was brought to a stop near Testo’s Roundabout.

Officers learnt that the suspected driver of the vehicle was wanted in connection with a report of criminal damage, so police took the decision to deploy a stinger device which burst the car’s tyres.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and has been reported for driving offences and was also found in possession of cannabis.

Inspector Paul Allen, of Northumbria Police, said: “This stretch of road is one of the busiest in our region, and we know speed is often an underlying factor when it comes to collisions that lead to serious injury or fatalities.

“So it almost beggared belief when our officers were stationed near the Angel of the North and saw a Jaguar hurtle past at more than 100mph – at more than twice the legal limit.

“What followed was fantastic teamwork between our staff in the Road Safety Department who clocked the Jaguar going past – and quickly then circulated the vehicle’s details.

“We will continue to listen to the community and take proactive action to tackle speeding in our region.

"Anyone found to be flouting the law and endangering the lives of others while behind the wheel will be dealt with robustly.”
