But Nathan Egglestone, 20, of Kipling Avenue, West Boldon, had not been lippy to them, magistrates were told.

Instead, he had taken off his top and been abusive to someone else – and did not put his clothing back on when twice requested to do so by officers.

Unemployed Egglestone was reprimanded by magistrates when he appeared before them to admit the charge, telling him they hoped he would never be in court again.

The court heard he had no previous convictions but did have a number of cautions of a similar nature.

Prosecutor Paul Anderson said: “At about one o’clock in the morning, police are flagged down by a female who asks if they can give her and her boyfriend a lift home.

“Mr Egglestone is there and has taken his top off and seems to be in an aggressive mood with someone.

“The officers ask him to put his top on. They ask him again. He doesn’t take them up.”

Joanne Gatens, defending, said: “I think he has his girlfriend partly to blame for this. He apologises to the court for his behaviour.

“He’s come to court with his mum, it’s been a bit of a shock. I’ve explained that it will be an expensive night out.”

Magistrates gave Egglestone a six-month conditional discharge and handed him court costs of £85 and a £21 victim surcharge.
