A man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary after an 84-year-old pensioner was attacked in his home in Whiteleas.

A manhunt was launched after a pensioner was shot by a suspected air rifle during an aggravated burglary in Manet Gardens, in the Whiteleas area of South Shields, at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, January 7.

It was reported that a masked man forced entry to the address and demanded money.

The victim confronted the man with a broomstick, at which point the intruder discharged what is believed to be an air gun and fled the address empty-handed.

Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital with a minor chest injury.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “We have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

“He has been released under investigation.”

Officers are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Northumbria Police, said: “I would now ask anybody who saw anything suspicious in the Manet Gardens area yesterday teatime to come forward. Your information – no matter how small – may be crucial in ensuring those responsible for this crime are rightly brought to justice.”
