Man charged with assaulting two South Shields nurses during pandemic lockdown

A man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with attacking two staff nurses on the same date.

John Paul Strother denies carrying out the alleged assaults, which are said to have taken place in South Shields since the coronavirus outbreak, and faces a trial later this year.

He has also pleaded not guilty to one count of causing harassment, alarm or distress to the same emergency workers – one a man and one a woman – after appearing before town magistrates via video link.

All three alleged offences are said to have taken place on Saturday, April 11, this year.

Strother, 28, who was produced from custody, was further remanded in custody until next month with a trial expected to take place on Tuesday, June 9, at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

Court documents state that his full address was not given during the hearing.
