Man dies after car crashes into house in South Shields in early hours of the morning

A man has died after a car crashed into house in South Shields in early hours of the morning.

Police were called at around 4.15am to Chichester Road where a white Audi S3 had collided with a house.

Emergency services attended but sadly the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and a formal identification process is ongoing.

A female passenger was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

It was also later established another man, a passenger, had left the scene of the collision but had been located in hospital with serious injuries.

Nobody inside the house was injured but significant damage was caused.

Chichester Road was closed between the junctions of Westoe Road and Dean Road as officers carried out inquiries.

A police helicopter was also at the scene.

The road has now reopened.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who may have information, dashcam footage or CCTV of the incident.

Inspector Phil Baker, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is very serious incident which has sadly resulted in the death of a man.

“A formal identification is now underway and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

"Inquiries are now being carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and the events that preceded it.

“If anybody saw what happened, or has CCTV from the area that could help our investigation, I would ask them to contact police as soon as possible.

“Even the smallest detail could be crucial to the investigation.”

A North East Ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.10am to reports that a car had collided with a wall on Chichester Road.

“We sent three doubled crewed ambulances, one doctor, one Hazardous Area Response Team, a specialist paramedic, a rapid response paramedic and an officer.

“One patient was taken to South Tyneside Hospital and a second patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they attended the incident and made the house safe.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Shortly after 4am this morning, we were called to an incident involving a car and a house on Chichester Road.

"Crews from South Shields, Hebburn, Marley Park and Wallsend attended and made the house safe by isolating the gas supply.

"An Urban Search and Rescue Tactical Adviser also attended to ensure the stability of the building.

"South Shields crews then returned at around 10am to further assist the police.

"They left the scene at around 11.45am."

During the incident drivers were urged to avoid the area and bus operator Go North East reported that its services were diverted away from Chichester Road in the town as a result of the road closure.

Go North East Tweeted at 6.08am: “Chichester Road in South Shields is closed by police.

“Service 26 and 50 are diverting via Dean Road and Imeary Street/Westoe Road.

“Please use stops at Wharton Street or Stanhope Pararade.”
