A reckless South Tyneside biker driving illegally smashed into a car at 100mph after hopping on a friend’s off-road machine to “test its limits”, a court heard.

Horror-struck Stephen Brown, 29, tried to wheelie over the Audi to avoid crashing where The Broadway and the Coast Road meet at South Shields seafront.

But the danger driver, of Moreland Road, Whiteleas, failed in his last-ditch evading manoeuvre on the night of Saturday, April 13 – and slammed into its rear.

The speedster was left lying in the road with serious injuries and required emergency surgery – and still uses crutches.

He hobbled into court, a result of his crash injuries, to plead guilty to a string of motoring offences including dangerous driving.

Brown also admitted possession of an illegal machete and lock knife – and cocaine – all found on him at the scene.

Prosecutor Emma O’Hegarty told the South Tyneside court: “The ambulance service was called to a report of a collision.

“The defendant was driving an orange off-road motorbike when he entered The Broadway from Bents Park Road, heading south towards Souter Lighthouse.

“He was driving in excess of 30mph. An Audi A1 has turned right into the Coast Road.

“The motorbike has collided with the back of the car, causing substantial damage to the vehicle and to the defendant.

“He was given care at the scene and taken to hospital. He made full admissions in interview and admitted to being the rider.

“He said he had taken the bike out to test its limits and had been driving at about 100mph.

“He said he had tried to wheelie over the vehicle to avoid hitting it.”

Brown also pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, driving without insurance, cocaine possession and two counts of possession of a bladed article in public.

Chris Wilson, defending, said only that Brown should be afforded full credit for entering immediate guilty pleas.

Judge Passfield handed Brown an interim driving ban and granted him unconditional bail to be sentenced at the crown court on Wednesday, December 11.
