MP slams 'abhorrent' far-right leaflet posted through doors

A South Tyneside MP and councillor are to contact the police after a far-right leaflet was pushed through doors in the borough.

The printed flyer claims white Britons are set to become a minority in the country and blames immigration for a variety of issues.

Circulation of the leaflet has prompted a furious response from the both the local MP and councillors, who described it as both ‘abhorrent’ and ‘divisive’.

A Hebburn father was one of those who found the hand-delivered leaflet on his doormat.

He said: “It was about 10am in the morning. I put my head out the door to see who had delivered it but there was no sign of anyone.

"I was amazed at first, then disgust set in.

"I have got a six-year-old daughter who is now at the stage where she reads everything and she could have got her hands on this.

"The people doing this have got no idea who is in the house - it could be people of colour or it could be refugees fleeing for their lives.

"When we first moved in, back in 2007, we used to get stuff from the BNP, but we have not had anything like this in ages."

Jarrow MP Kate Osborne urged anyone who had received one of the leaflets to join her in contacting the police.

She said: “To see these flyers being circulated in our community is very disturbing and I’d encourage anyone who knows anything about them to report it to the Police, as I have done.

“These flyers are abhorrent and the group associated with them should be looked into urgently.”

Hebburn North ward member Coun Adam Ellison said: “To those circulating this divisive literature, I call on you to stop immediately.

"No individual or group has the right to divide our community.

"I will be raising this matter with the local area policing team.”

His Hebburn South colleague Coun Wilf Flynn added: “The only place this belongs is in the bin.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed to the Gazette that the force had been made aware of the letter.
