Northumbria Police said the two men were arrested after the alleged incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, April 11.

The incident is said to have taken place in Osborne Avenue, South Shields, at around 3am.

Both men, aged 30 and 21, were arrested on Sunday, April 12, on suspicion of robbery.

Officers said the taxi driver attended hospital for injuries said to have been sustained during the attack.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 3.07am on Saturday, April 11, we received a report of an assault on a taxi driver at Osborne Avenue, South Shields.

“The driver, who later brought himself to hospital, reported being assaulted by two male passengers who also stole £130 in cash.

“Two men, aged 30 and 21, were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of robbery.”

Inquiries into the incident are still ongoing.
