The force received information about a suspect wanted in connection with a robbery shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday, March 31.
A force spokesman said: “As a result, officers were deployed to Saxon Way in Jarrow where they found a vehicle believed to be linked to the suspect.
“Police carried out a search of a neighbouring address but the suspect was not present. Nobody was injured.”
