Rogue South Shields driver jailed for flouting motoring ban

Craig Malcolm Sykes was locked up after a court decided that his two motoring offences were aggravated by his previous criminal record.

He was already disqualified when he was spotted flouting his ban by driving a Ford Fusion car in Secretan Way, South Shields, earlier this year.

Sykes, 35, of Candlish Street, South Shields, is now beginning more than five months in jail after he admitted charges of driving while disqualified and without insurance when he appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

The court decided earlier this month to imprison him for a total of 21 weeks “because the offence was aggravated by the defendant's record of previous offending”.

Sykes, who committed the offences on March 30, is also now banned from driving for four years and 70 days.
