IT Technician Graham Erickson said: “I was just shocked, one of my friends who is a taxi driver messaged me in the middle of the night but when I got here and saw the extent of the damage, it’s quite a lot.

“You don’t expect to come to work and see that a car has drove through the front of the shop.”

“We now just have to go through all the insurance companies to work out the cost of the damage and try and operate as best we can for the time being. We might have to close.”

Northumbria Police have confirmed that inquiries are still ongoing following the incident. A police spokesman has said: “Three occupants of the blue Ford Mondeo fled the scene but were all arrested nearby and remain in custody at this time.”

Police are asking anyone who saw the blue Ford Mondeo in the early hours of Monday to contact them on 101 quoting log 30 02/03/20.
