2019 has marked a busy year for Northumbria Police’s officers working across Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Here are some of the significant custodial sentences handed down to criminals in both areas in 2019, according to the force.

Luke, 26, was jailed for six years on December 13 following a brutal and sudden attack on a victim – who was known to him - in broad daylight on the afternoon of May 2 near Tyne Dock Metro Station after a short altercation. Luke left the area and attempted to cover his tracks by discarding his distinctive coat into nearby overgrowth. But it was soon spotted and seized by police, who subsequently arrested and charged him. Luke, of Whitehall Street, South Shields, denied wounding with intent and having an offensive weapon but was found guilty of both offences by a jury following a trial.

5. Paul Luke: 6 years

A burglar who left his blood and fingerprints behind as he raided more than a dozen homes across Sunderland was brought to justice earlier. Robinson, 30, was told he had caused widespread misery and inconvenience by a judge at Newcastle Crown Court in October as he jailed him for five years. His crime spree saw him steal sentimental jewellery and electrical items, but after inadvertently leaving behind a trail of clues at his various crimes, including blood-stained boxer shorts and smeared fingerprints, Robinson, of Lambton Tower, Sunderland, was swiftly identified as the likely offender. In July, he pleaded guilty to four burglaries as well as charges of attempted burglary, theft and criminal damage. He also asked for 10 similar burglary offences to be taken into consideration.
