Since Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed a national lockdown in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus, Northumbria Police has issued 150 fines to people who have been flouting the rules.

When the measures were imposed additional policing powers were put in place so, where necessary, the new rules could be enforced.

Chief Superintendent Janice Hutton said: “We are grateful to the overwhelming majority of people who continue to show resolve and adhere to the restrictions which are in place to ultimately save lives.

“When the lockdown was announced, we were very clear that we would look to engage with members of the public to explain the rules and encourage people to follow them.

“However, we have always stated that where necessary we would make use of legislation available to enforce the restrictions in order to protect our communities.

“We are now six weeks into the lockdown and unfortunately there are people who continue to breach the measures and that has resulted in action being taken.

“It is vital everyone plays their part in combating Covid-19 and follows the restrictions which are in place – together we can make a real difference.”

Those fined include a group who travelled 40 miles to camp in the woods and friends who had gathered to hold a barbecue in the countryside, which also posed a fire risk.
