He denied the same charge against a second officer on the same date, also in Beach Road, South Shields, and of being involved in disorderly behaviour.

Co-accused Mark Fletcher, 36, of Laygate, South Shields, pleaded not guilty to assaulting the second officer and to a charge of disorderly behaviour.

Both men will stand trial on Thursday, June 11, at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

They were granted bail on condition they reside at the addresses given to the court, enter Beach Road once only to collect personal belongings from a property, and do not associate with one another until the trial.
