Two arrested after man and woman injured in street attack in South Shields

Police are investigating after a woman was hit on the head while trying to stop a vicious broad daylight attack in South Shields.

Officers were called to Horsley Hill Square at about 1.45pm on Tuesday (December 8), following reports of two men carrying out the assault, one of whom is believed to have had a metal bar with him at the time.

The pair, aged 18 and 19, were later arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and released on police bail.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “It was reported that a 30-year-old man had been assaulted in the street by two other males who were in possession of a metal bar.

“A woman who was with the victim is then understood to have stepped in to try and stop the attack and was herself struck on the head.

“Thankfully, neither victim suffered serious injury.”
