An investigation is ongoing. Officers believe all parties were known to each other.
Northumbria Police’s Detective Sergeant David Reeves, who is leading the investigation, said: “There is absolutely no place for incidents like this in our community and we will take robust action against anybody found to have been involved.
“This was clearly a serious assault that happened in a busy area of the town. The victim remains in hospital with multiple injuries and we will continue to offer him any support he needs.
“We are now determined to finding out the circumstances surrounding the incident and would ask anybody with information, or who was in the area at the time and saw the assault took place, to get in touch.
“Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could prove crucial as we look to identify and trace those responsible and ensure they are ultimately brought to justice.”
