A woman who bit a policeman during the coronavirus lockdown has avoided an immediate jail term.

Eva Santos Martinez has instead received a suspended prison sentence following the incident in South Shields in April.

Documents issued by South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court indicate that “because of her lack of previous convictions, the judge is prepared to suspend it on this occasion.”

Credit was given for her guilty plea and the court also heard the “circumstances were that she was victim of serious assault prior to the incident”.

Martinez, whose address was given as Rua Dr Flaquer, Sao Paulo, Brazil, was present in court to admit assaulting an emergency worker on April 22.

District Judge Kathryn Meek imposed a two-month jail term, which was suspended for a year, and ordered her to pay £500 compensation.

She must also pay a £128 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
