Customs House jobs under review: Theatre boss says redundancy '˜last outcome they would wish for'

It has been claimed that three jobs are under threat at the Customs House, in South Shields, and the venue is facing a £30,000 shortfall.

Stephen Little, the new commercial manager at the Mill Dam venue, has said that redundancy is “the very last outcome” they would like to see.

However, he does say that certain posts in the staffing structure are being reviewed.

Mr Little said: “As new commercial manager I have reviewed the current operational position of the Customs House. The very last outcome we would wish for is redundancy. However, certain posts in the current staffing structure are being reviewed.

“We would hope to create new opportunities to relocate staff within the organisation. The whole process is looking at where we need the resource and who is best suited to fit the need.”

He added: “I have every confidence that the new staff structure will present a sustainable future for the organisation. Together with changes having already been made without any redundancy, the Customs House is well placed to face future challenges.”

Last year, the venue, which includes theatre and art gallery spaces, as well as a restaurant and a cinema, faced closure.

It had been due to close on January 30, but was saved after help from Arts Council England.

Since then, thousands have been raised to fund the venue, which is a big supporter of the local arts.

Borough stars including comedian Jason Cook and X Factor champ Joe McElderry staged shows to raise cash.
