The Atletico Madrid defender is poised to become the relegated club's fourth summer signing.

Gamez is a right-back, but he can play across the back four.

And the anticipated arrival of the 31-year-old puts a question mark over the future of Daryl Janmaat.

United manager Rafa Benitez, however, is under no pressure to sell anyone this summer.

But Benitez could be prepared to part with the 26-year-old, who missed the latter part of last season with hand and groin injuries.

Gamez, meanwhile, joined Diego Simeone's Atletico two years ago after a nine-year first-team career at Malaga.

Newcastle have already signed Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Matz Sels.

After the completing those signings, the club turned its attention to defensive targets.
