Sunderland are hoping to give their summer transfer business a significant boost by concluding a deal for defender Jack Baldwin.

The 25-year-old centre-back, formerly of Hartlepool United, is due on Wearside for a medical today after an agreement was reached on a fee and personal terms.

Baldwin is a richly experienced League One campaigner but was made available for transfer by Peterborough United manager Steve Evans.

Sunderland were knocked back earlier in the summer in a bid for Baldwin, as were Sheffield Wednesday.

The Black Cats will now hope that they have taken a significant step towards making Baldwin their ninth summer signing.

Boss Jack Ross remains determined to strengthen his squad and is still seeking at least two strikers.

He is also keen on adding a replacement for Callum McManaman, following his return to former club Wigan, and a central midfielder.
