The photo below was taken in August, 1972, and shows the then-Mayor, Councillor Vincent Fitzpatrick, signing an public decency campaign petition, watched by the Mayoress and the Rev David Carter, the local organiser, at Town Hall.
The Mayor and Mayoress can also be seen (right) giving four members of South Shields Nautical Training Corps a civic send off.
