Double yellow lines have appeared at popular parking spots used by footy fans and commuters after complaints from nearby businesses.

The parking restrictions have been put in place along the junctions of Shaftesbury Avenue from Monksway to Newcastle Road in Bede Industrial Estate.

The streets are used by commuters parking their cars to board the Metro at Bede Station and to watch South Shields Football Club play at its ground in Shaftesbury Avenue.

Council bosses say the markings are to improve road safety following complaints from businesses.

However, the lines have appeared ‘overnight’ according to one angry Gazette reader and will cause problems for football fans and Metro users.

The commuter said: “I travel to Newcastle for work and I use Bede metro station. Overnight double yellow lines have been painted onto the road leading to the Metro station, leaving even less space for those people who don’t live within walking distance to park as there is not a dedicated parking area for the Metro users.

We started marking double yellow lines last week.

Council spokesman

“I’m more annoyed at the fact that this leaves less space for the home and away supporters coming to South Shields Football Club,

“Why does a trading estate need double yellow lines, when over 90% of the companies have there own parking areas?”

The lines have been painted to help larger vehicles use the roads, say council chiefs.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We started marking double yellow lines last week at the junctions on Shaftesbury Avenue from Monksway to Newcastle Road.

“This is to enhance road safety and improve visibility following complaints from local businesses regarding access, especially for larger vehicles.

“However, beyond the Metro bridge it is private land and we understand the landowner has also painted double yellow lines on that road.”
