Driver of lorry which overturned on A19 suffered 'medical episode' police confirm as road reopens following overnight closure

The driver of a lorry which overturned on the A19 suffered a ‘medical episode’ and lost control of the vehicle, police have confirmed.

The lorry travelling on the A19 southbound between Seaham Grange and Murton, flipped over and crashed into the central reservation at around 6pm on Thursday, May 21.

Thankfully the driver only suffered minor injuries.

Police closed the A19 from the A690 to the A1018 in both directions overnight following the incident near Seaham as officers assessed the safety of the barrier.

In the early hours of Friday morning (May 22) Highways England confirmed on Twitter that the road had fully reopened in both directions and the vehicle had been removed.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police were called to reports of a one-vehicle collision on the A19 southbound between Seaham Grange and Murton.

“The collision involved a lorry which is believed to have lost control and flipped over landing on the central reservation point.

“The driver who is believed to have suffered a medical episode, received minor injuries and the road has now reopened.”
