
Northumbria Police have confirmed they are still on scene cleaning up debris after a JCB on the back of a lorry hit the side of a Metro bridge over the A19 southbound.
Police were called to the collision in the East Howdon area at 1.15pm and closed one lane of the dual carriageway.
They are warning motorists to expect delays as only one lane and the slip road remains open while they are in the process of removing the crane from the scene.
A Tyne and Wear Metro Spokesman said: "Trains were suspended between North Shields and Wallsend at 1.20pm due to the need to inspect the structure an the tracks.
