An elderly woman has been taken to hospital after falling into the road in South Shields.

Northumbria Police said the incident happened on Prince Edward Road, in the Nook area, at around 2.40pm on Sunday, May 30.

An ambulance attended and treated the woman at the scene before taking her to South Tyneside Hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

It is understood she suffered a fracture and potential eye injury, the force said.

Police said they helped to manage traffic during the incident until the road was cleared shortly after 4pm.

"We assisted with traffic management at an incident where a female had fallen over in the road,” Northumbria Police confirmed.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of an injured female in Prince Edward Road, South Shields at 2.36pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and transported the patient to South Tyneside Hospital.”
