Emergency services respond to reports of 'man in distress' at South Shields coast

Police officers and crew from South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were called to the South Shields coast to the aid of a man.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said on Thursday, June 18: “At about 11.15pm yesterday we received a report of a male in distress off the Coast Road, South Shields.

“Officers attended the scene and the man was brought to safety.”

The Life Brigade also confirmed its attendance at the incident, and said its crews encouraged the man to safety.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade said it was originally called to the Marsden area to assist a man.
