'Do your checks': South Tyneside Council's advice to stop fly-tipping

South Tyneside Council has issued advice to residents in an effort to clamp down on fly tipping.

South Tyneside Council is warning residents about falling for fly-tipping scams.

The council is supporting Keep Britain Tidy’s Fly-Tipping Fortnight which runs until October 25. The message is that people should think twice about an offer to take their rubbish away for cash.

The council says: “If you’re paying someone to remove waste, always do your checks. Ask to see their waste carrier licence and make sure you receive a waste transfer note detailing what has been taken away. These simple steps can help protect you and ensure your waste is disposed of legally.

“Remember: if your rubbish is fly-tipped, you could be held responsible if you didn't take reasonable steps to check who was taking it away.

“Let's work together to keep South Tyneside clean and tackle fly-tipping.”

If someone won't give you the information you need, don't give them your rubbish. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
