People will go to the polls on May 7 and more than 200 candidates have put their names forward.

South Tyneside Council normally holds its elections by ‘thirds’ for its 54 councillors, with one council seat in each of the borough's 18 wards up for grabs each election cycle.

Electors can vote for no more than three candidates in their ward and anyone wanting to vote must be on the electoral register.

Former borough councillors and previous candidates are just some of the people throwing their hats into the ring this year.

With a number of councillors standing down at the end of their terms, the council is expected to see several new faces once the polls have closed.

The Labour Party currently controls exactly half of the seats on the local authority and the final results on May 7 could lead to new political leadership in South Tyneside.

The council’s Labour Group and opposition Green Party and independents will be contesting and defending seats across the borough.

Council documents confirm the Labour Group and Green Party will be standing three candidates in each of the borough's 18 wards.

Reform UK, who have no elected councillors on the local authority, will also be standing candidates in all 54 seats, while 39 independent candidates are standing across the majority of wards.

The Conservative Party will also be standing 12 candidates, while the Liberal Democrats will be standing two candidates.

Voters going to a polling station on May 7 will need to show photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

Those without one of the accepted types of ID can apply for a free voter authority certificate at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate, or can contact the borough council’s electoral services for more information.
