Exhibition honours Hollywood movie legend Ridley Scott

To celebrate the works of South Shields-born Hollywood director Sir Ridley Scott, degree students from Hartlepool’s Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) are showcasing their talents alongside staff and alumni with a display of costumes at a special exhibition in South Tyneside’s new national library and digital media centre The Word.

Costume and production design degree students from the college - where Sir Ridley studied from 1954 to 1958 - recreated a number of costumes and props from six of his best-known films.

Final year students from the BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design degree programme joined BA (Hons) Production Design for Stage and Screen to create replicas including the Toymaker from Blade Runner, Ripley’s jumpsuit from Alien and Robin Hood’s costume.

Joining them are contributions from staff, including the ‘Alien’ egg, the Voight Kampff machine from Blade Runner, and a helmet from The Martian.

Chloe Leeson, 20, is on the final year of her BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design degree, and created the Toy Maker costume: “I was looking to do a project that had lots of components and the Toymaker costume fit the bill, with fabric dyes, digital printing, embellishment and ageing and distressing, so there was a lot of scope,” she said. “I think his costume is one of the most interesting of the whole film, despite the entire outfit only being seen for about five minutes.”

Comedian and novelist David Baddiel, who opened the new centre, was most impressed.

“The costumes and props are brilliant, really amazing replicas and I think the exhibition is one of the highlights,” he said.
