Exhibition of photographer's work featuring Jarrow march on show

Photographer Paul Perry’s work on the Jarrow Crusade is on display within the town’s library for a further two weeks.

The exhibition was put together to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the famous march which saw 200 men walk to London in protest of the lack of jobs in the area.

Mr Perry, who has amassed more than 70,000 images of Jarrow since he started his collection in 1966 said: “I heard there was going to be a number of exhibitions in relation to the Jarrow March around the region, however, there was not one for Jarrow.

“This crusade was part of Jarrow’s history and this is the place e where an exhibition should be held.

“This display is around 100 yards from where it all started from.

“There has been a number of people who have gone along to the exhibition and I’ve been really pleased with the response.

“The crusade is an important part of the town’s history which should be celebrated and remembered.”

The exhibition is on display within the library in Cambrian Street, Jarrow and takes people through the various stages of the crusade from start to finish.

Since it’s launch at the beginning of the month it has been seen by library visitors and schoolchildren learning about the town’s history.

The exhibition has also been visited by the town’s MP Stephen Hepburn.

He said: “I was pleased to visit Paul Perry’s Jarrow Crusade exhibition at Jarrow Library in this it’s 80th anniversary year.

“I’m full of admiration for Paul’s work in keeping Jarrow’s proud history alive through his collection of archive photographs.

“The exhibition itself is a fine portrayal of the Crusade itself and the events that led up to it.”
