Explosive items found as bomb disposal team visit South Shields home after man's death

Bomb disposal officers were called to a South Shields house after police found suspicious items that could have been used to make an improvised explosive device at the address of a man who has since died.

A number of items, which could have been used to make an improvised explosive device, were discovered by police while attending an address in The Lonnen on Wednesday.

Northumbria Police said officers were originally called to the house over concerns for the welfare of a man.

The 65-year-old man was taken to hospital, but has passed away since.

The force said police and bomb disposal experts have removed the items and there is no danger to the public.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “On Wednesday (February 3) we attended an address on The Lonnen, South Shields following a report of concern for the welfare of a male.

“A 65-year-old man was subsequently taken to hospital and has since sadly passed away. His next of kin have been notified and there is not believed to have been any third party involvement.

“While at the address in question, officers also found a number of suspicious items that could have potentially been used to make an improvised explosive device.

“Police supported by bomb disposal experts have since safely removed the items. There is no wider threat to the public.”
