Fire dealt with at Newcastle's historic Swing Bridge

Firefighters were dealing with a blaze on the pontoon throughout the afternoon.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue were called at 1.40pm today - and said about 25 square metres of wooden staves under the bridge were on fire.

Three crews attended the scene along with a fire boat. They were assisted by police in the area monitoring traffic.

It is not yet known how the fire started.
