November 1 1989 – West Brom 1-5 Newcastle

Goals from Gary Brazil, Kevin Brock, Mark McGhee and Liam O’Brien inspired Jim Smith’s men to their biggest-ever away win against the Baggies.

An own goal rounded off the Magpies’ romp, and took them above local rivals Sunderland into third place in the old Second Division.

Famously, both North East sides would go on to reach – and play each other in - the promotion play-offs.

February 7 2009 – West Brom 2-3 Newcastle

Damien Duff, Peter Lovenkrands and local boy Steven Taylor were on the scoresheet in a barnstormer which, at the time, appeared to ease Newcastle’s relegation fears.

Assistant manager Chris Hughton took charge after Joe Kinnear had been taken to hospital prior to the match.

Duff pounced on a Leon Barnett error to open the scoring with a trademark left footer from close range, before Marc Antoine Fortune levelled almost immediately.

Free transfer signing Lovenkrands marked his first start for Newcastle by slotting home a cool low finish, before Steven Taylor’s header gave United a two-goal cushion at the break.

A more cagey second half threatened to go sour for the visitors when Fortune fired home his second, 17 minutes from time, but Newcastle held on.

March 25 2012 – West Brom 1-3 Newcastle

Attacking prowess was the order of the day back in 2012, as Newcastle produced an exciting offensive display.

Arguably it was United’s most fluent attacking half of football since the days of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers.

Papiss Cisse opened the scoring, slotting home at close range from a Hatem Ben Arfa cross.

Ben Arfa then struck himself after superb interplay with Yohan Cabaye as West Brom were ripped apart.

And Cisse swept home a third before half-time after the mesmeric Ben Arfa had led another breakneck speed breakaway.

Shane Long pulled a goal back in a second half when United were happy to contain the home side and move level on points in the Premier League with fifth-placed Chelsea.
